U.S. 441 reopened yesterday, 90 days after a landslide closed it, according to The Citizen Times. The road is a main thoroughfare through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and the park had partnered up to offer the contractor financial incentives of up to $500,000 to get the road open before May 15. It worked. The contractors reopened the road 30 days ahead of schedule.
The road carries an estimated 2.2 million visitors annually.
